Super exited that this cover that I shot of Reem Assil for Plate Magazine is out! This was a fun one and I’ve been waiting impatiently for its release. Reem is a gracious and beautiful person and it was a delight to shoot her looking like a boss. (the boss that she is!) We shot this at Oaks Card Club in Emeryville, which was an interesting experience in itself. Poker culture is fascinating and slightly intimidating to me-so much etiquette! So many strategies! I thought for sure my strobe going off would be bothersome to the people playing at the club so we scouted a few side rooms where no one was playing but none of them worked. So we did end up photographing in the main card room, and I quickly realized none of the players cared a bit- they were all laser focused on their game. This image is quiet and solitary but there was the steady buzz of about fifteen poker games going on all around us. Warm thanks all around to the gracious folks at @oakscardclub and my mighty crew.
